Feds Give Guidance on Security Rule
Health Data Management (June 9, 2005)

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has released three more educational papers on the HIPAA security rule. The rule's compliance date for all covered entities except very small payers was April 20.

The papers--seven of which are planned with five now published--are designed to explain specific requirements of the rule from those who wrote and will enforce it, the thought process behind the requirements, and possible ways to address the provisions.

The new educational papers cover administrative safeguards; technical safeguards; and policies, procedures and documentation requirements. The previous papers offered an overview of the rule and discussed physical safeguards.

The centers has yet to publish educational papers covering risk analysis/risk management and implementation for small providers.

The five published papers are available on the government's official HIPAA Web site, cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2.
