HHS Opens Provider ID Sign-Up
Health Data Management (May 24, 2005)

The Department of Health and Human Services now is accepting applications for a national provider identifier. Mandated under the HIPAA administrative simplification provisions, most covered entities must use the identifier by May 23, 2007. Very small health plans have an additional year. Providers, however, should not start using the identifier until health plans have issued notice that they are ready to accept it.

HHS has developed an instructional Web tool to explain the identifier and the application, and then enable providers to apply. Called the NPI Viewlet, the tool is available under Latest News on the official HIPAA Web site, www.cms.hhs.gov/hipaa/hipaa2.

Further, HHS soon will have the official enumeration Web site operational at https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov.
